Welcome to Communication Skills at Smith School! My name is Mary Kay Hamalainen, and I will be your child’s speech-language therapist for the 2011-12 academic year. In our classes we work on four basic communication modalities: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Our students work on age-appropriate articulation, semantics (vocabulary), syntax (grammar), working memory, word retrieval, auditory processing, narrative expression, social skills, and much, much more! The school year is well underway, and we are working on our targeted speech and language goals.
When your child is scheduled to participate in a special activity during one of our regular speech-language classes (such as an assembly or a holiday party), I prefer not to have him or her miss the class special. It is very important for children to be able to share these experiences with classmates, and opportunities to practice and refine language and social skills are often highlights of these events. I will make every effort to include your child in an alternative session, if and when possible.
I do not regularly assign speech-language homework, but if you would like to have me put together a homework folder customized for your child, please let me know and I will be happy to do so.
No one knows your child better than you do. If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, or if you would like to share some insights into your child’s communication skills, please feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org. If an e-mail or a phone conversation is not sufficient, I would be happy to arrange a mutually convenient time before or after school to meet with you to discuss any helpful information you might like to share with me regarding your child.
We are enjoying a wonderful year here at Smith School! Thank you for this opportunity to work with and get to know your child!
